Favorites: MOVIE ROMANCES

As you probably know, today is Valentine's Day, a day in which couples will roam the streets and engage in massive public displays of affection. Obviously I'm exaggerating a bit, but there's definitely love in the air when February 14 rolls around each year. So, in order to commemorate the holiday, I've listed my twenty favorite cinematic romances of all time, counting them down all the way to number one. As you'll see from this list, it almost goes to show that love knows no bounds in the cinematic world, and that's what makes some of these romances all the more memorable and endearing. Mind you, these are simply my own personal favorites, and I've only used films I've actually seen, so if you think there's a glaring exception, there just might be a reason for it. All that being said, I hope you enjoy this list. Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

20. Ed & Sandra
Big Fish (2003)
Portrayed by: Ewan McGregor/Albert Finney & Alison Lohman/Jessica Lange
The quirky world that Tim Burton creates helps set a fantastical backdrop for this tale of love that knows no bounds. We as the audience are able to see the relationship between Ed and Sandra both as young adults and as an elderly couple, and it's this complete picture that makes their romance all the more endearing. Filled with brilliant colors and outrageous stories, this pair is sure to keep a smile on your face.

19. Harry & Sally
When Harry Met Sally... (1989)
Portrayed by: Billy Crystal & Meg Ryan
Arguably one of the most famous cinematic couples to grace the silver screen, the ever-budding romance between Harry and Sally spans a number of years and suffers a number of close calls. Part of the appeal of their relationship is the fact that, although they meet at an early age and continually bump into one another throughout the years, they never truly realize that they're meant for each other until its almost too late. Sure, it's a bit sappy, but this is rom-com gold, if you ask me.

*****

18. Allie & Noah
The Notebook (2004)
Portrayed by: Rachel McAdams/Gena Rowlands & Ryan Gosling/James Garner
It was only recently that I sat down to watch The Notebook, and although the film itself proves to be a bit melodramatic and over-the-top, the story of this young love overcoming years apart is hard to ignore. Sure, it's ridiculous and a bit over-hyped, but I can see where so many girls and young women have fallen in love with the story of Allie and Noah's romance.

*****

17. Mikal & Zia
Wristcutters: A Love Story (2007)
Portrayed by: Shannyn Sossamon & Patrick Fugit
When a film has a subtitle like "A Love Story," it had better deliver on its romantic prospects. Fortunately, this indie flick that delves into the afterlife of suicide victims manages to portray a touching romantic tale. In an otherworldly dimension where people can't even smile, you'd think it'd be tough to find the love of your life, but as Mikal and Zia take their road trip to find the "people in charge," feelings they never felt in mortality start to rise to the surface.

*****

16. Clementine & Joel
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Portrayed by: Kate Winslet & Jim Carrey
As with The Notebook, it was only recently that I had the opportunity to give Eternal Sunshine a viewing, and it offers quite the romance. Like most of the couples already listed, Joel and Clementine have to overcome quite an obstacle on their path to happiness. Their roadblock? They want to erase one another from their respective memories. Just wait and see how this one plays out in this dramatic comedy.

*****

15. Han & Leia
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Portrayed by: Harrison Ford & Carrie Fisher
How could I possibly leave out one of the most famous romances to hit movie theaters. While there were sparks in the original 1977 Star Wars film, the Han/Leia romance didn't actually explode until The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, culminating with that ever-famous dialogue exchange:
Leia: I love you.
Han: I know.

*****

14. Jack & Rose
Titanic (1997)
Portrayed by: Leonardo DiCaprio & Kate Winslet
Aside from the fact that Jack and Rose proved to be the movie couple of a generation, there's actually a lot to like about their particular romance. A down-on-his-luck American boy meets a wealthy European heiress on a doomed voyage across the Atlantic? There's going to be a lot of drama and romance, and they have to get it all done in such a short amount of time. Wins all around.

*****

13. Aladdin & Jasmine
Aladdin (1992)
Voiced by: Scott Weinger/Brad Kane & Linda Larkin/Lea Salonga
I'd be hard-pressed not to include the couple from my favorite animated Disney flick on this list, even if they're not quite up to snuff romantically as some of the others. But as soon as they hop onto that magic carpet and take that ride through "a whole new world," I'm hooked.

*****

12. Girl & Guy
Once (2007)
Portrayed by: Markéta Irglová & Glen Hansard
The fact that the audience can only refer to the characters as "Guy" and "Girl" is only the start of this beautiful relationship. Throughout the film, we know the chemistry that sparks between them, and it only makes the strains in their romance all the more difficult to watch and understand. I'm pretty sure I haven't yelled so loudly at a film as I did at the end of this one.

*****

11. Rhett Butler & Scarlett O'Hara
Gone with the Wind (1939)
Portrayed by: Clark Gable & Vivien Leigh
A timeless romance that will always be near the top of anyone's list, you simply can't take away from the brilliance of both this film and the performances that brought Rhett and Scarlett to life. Although I'm sure most people know how this one ends, it's still quite the tale of love and love lost in the midst of a wartime effort.

*****

10. Baby & Johnny
Dirty Dancing (1987)
Portrayed by: Jennifer Grey & Patrick Swayze
Can you say "'80s classic?" Long before their beautiful serenade to "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," you'll be falling in love with this vacationing girl finding her man in a rugged dance instructor who steals her heart.

*****

9. Ilsa & Rick
Casablanca (1942)
Portrayed by: Ingrid Bergman & Humphrey Bogart
To accept that the love of your life can have a better life with another person is truly devastating, but that's the road we have to take with Casablanca, and it's what's made the relationship between Rick and Ilsa all the more memorable.

*****

8. Danny & Sandy
Grease (1978)
Portrayed by: John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John
Sappy, cheesy and downright dorky at times, there's something truly endearing about this original high school musical that brings two fantastic singing talents together to create beautiful melodies with one another. From their opening number in "Summer Nights" to their personal finale in "You're the One That I Want," you'll be singing and dancing along with Danny and Sandy all the way.

*****

7. Beast & Belle
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Voiced by: Robby Benson & Paige O'Hara
Often attempted but only once truly created brilliantly, this Broadway-style animated flick offers one of the most sentimental and beautiful romances of the last twenty-five years. There's no wonder it rode to so many accolades as well as into so many hearts.

*****

6. Carl & Ellie
Up (2009)
Voiced by: Edward Asner/Jeremy Leary & Elie Docter
One of the more recent additions to this list, the marriage between Carl and Ellie is shown through a montage early in the film, and it's one of the most beautifully-crafted scenes I've ever seen. It takes us through the highs and lows of their lives together, and although it only last for a few moments, it feels like we've known them for a lifetime.

*****

5. Buttercup & Westley
The Princess Bride (1987)
Portrayed by: Robin Wright & Cary Elwes
If you're speaking about film icons, you can't take away from one of the biggest go-to films in the romance genre. Although it's a bit quirky, there's never anything undeniable about Westley's love for Buttercup, and it's always sealed with an "As you wish."

*****

4. EVE & WALL-E
WALL-E (2008)
Voiced by: Elissa Knight & Ben Burtt
Now, I'm sure some people are going to scoff at this addition considering the characters are robots, but there's a beautiful relationship between the two that I'm sure is love. From WALL-E's attempt at a romantic date to their beautiful dance around the Axiom to their altogether shocking "kiss," I fell in love with this pair from the moment I first saw this film.

*****

3. Christian & Satine
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Portrayed by: Ewan McGregor & Nicole Kidman
When you have two actors like McGregor and Kidman putting on a show like the one they put on in Moulin Rouge!, you'd be hard-pressed at least not to like the characters on their own. But when they're placed in the throes of romance, it only heightens their likability. These two are perfect for one another.

*****

2. Summer & Tom
(500) Days of Summer (2009)
Portrayed by: Zooey Deschanel & Joseph Gordon-Levitt
I've always assumed that (500) Days of Summer was a romantic comedy aimed at the male audience, mostly because it's the male perspective that we're seeing and receiving throughout the film. I have yet to find a guy who didn't like this film because I'm almost positive every guy out there has his own "Summer." You'll laugh and cry along with this one, but it does hit some very true and realistic tones along the way.

*****

1. Ennis & Jack
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Portrayed by: Heath Ledger & Jake Gyllenhaal
This has been, and will continue to be, the most realistic and beautiful romance I've ever seen on film. When Brokeback Mountain was first released, I was one of those people who called it a "gay cowboy" movie. After a friend forced me to watch it two-and-a-half years later, however, I saw the beauty in it all, from the storyline down to the pitch-perfect performances provided by Ledger and Gyllenhaal, and it helped change my perspective on life and love as a whole. It's a truly touching tale of two men just trying to find time for the one they truly love.
