It's birthday time again, and we're celebrating the 49th birthday of a certain actor named
Tom Cruise. It's hard to believe that this man is closing in on fifty years old, but needless to say, he's definitely provided quite a bit of entertainment both on and off the screen throughout his career. Yes, he's had his personal life scrutinized and skewered countless times over the past few years, from his connection to Scientology to his
Katie Holmes love-fest on
Oprah Winfrey's show, and through it all, I think some people have forgotten just how good of an actor he actually is. Sure, he often gets typecast into roles that work with his personality, but he's managed to nab three Academy Award nominations over the years, so he's even garnered some critical praise as well. So push all the thoughts of his apparent "craziness" to the side and enjoy his acting. He may not be the greatest ever to live, but he definitely does well with most of his material. So on his 49th birthday, I salute Mr. Cruise by listing my five favorite of his roles. You'll next be able to see him in theaters this December in the latest installment of the
Mission: Impossible franchise,
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Once again, happy birthday, Tom Cruise!
